But if you want to see life beyond the well-known streets around Jonker Street, then the Highlights bike tour with Baja Bikes is a great way to discover a different side of Melaka.

Accompanied by a local guide, you’ll cycle at a leisurely pace towards a traditional Malay village. Along the way, you’ll see typical local houses and get a glimpse of daily life. It’s not a string of tourist highlights, but rather a peek into the Melaka you might not find on your own.

My favorite part might just be the stop at a traditional Malay house. Here, you’ll enjoy a local snack and drink while learning more about the culture and customs of the residents. This makes the tour much more personal than just cycling past and snapping a photo.

The bike tour lasts about 2 hours and covers around 8 kilometers. The pace is deliberately relaxed, so there’s plenty of time to look around, listen to the guide’s stories, and take photos. The bike, local guide, and the snack and drink are all included.

What I particularly enjoy is the contrast with the historical center. First, you admire the red colonial buildings and the hustle around Jonker Street, and then you get to know local Malaysian life. It’s this other side of Melaka that makes this tour so special.

And afterwards? Time for an ice-cold cendol. After two hours of cycling in the tropical heat, you’ve earned it. 😉

Taste Melaka: from Nyonya laksa to ice-cold cendol

If there’s one place in Malaysia you should visit with an appetite, it’s Melaka.
