Not without reason the famous square of this fortress city, both at home and abroad. What the Dam is to Amsterdam, the Vrijthof is to the people of Maastricht. A square to stroll around, enjoy a beer on one of the many terraces, or visit the Theater aan het Vrijthof. And not to forget: to visit the Romanesque St. Servatius Church. This square boasts no less than 38 national monuments, a true feast for art historians and each one a Maastricht attraction worth pausing for.<\/p>\n

De Markt<\/h3>\n

In the city center of Maastricht lies the market. This is a square where the Maastricht City Hall is located. Additionally, there are several dining establishments around it where you can enjoy lunch, drinks, or a casual drink. The atmosphere here is incredibly cozy, and you can enjoy the beautiful view.<\/p>\n

De Sint-Janskerk<\/h3>\n

The Sint-Janskerk is a Maastricht attraction you must see. It is a Protestant church that has become a symbol of the city.<\/p>\n

Schatkamer Basiliek van Sint Servaas<\/h3>\n

This treasury is a museum of religious art located in the Basilica of Saint Servatius. You can find objects from medieval goldsmithing and other interesting artifacts from that time. Here, Saint Servatius was buried in 384. Additionally, in the treasury, you will also find the bust of Servatius on display.<\/p>\n

Open from Mon to Sat from 10:00 AM to 4:30 PM and on Sunday from 12:30 PM to 4:30 PM | Entrance is 5 euros, and for seniors and students, 3 euros.<\/em><\/p>\n

Bisschopsmolen<\/h3>\n

In the heart of the city, you’ll find a traditional marvel. This still-operating watermill serves as a bakery. Check in advance if you can join one of the tours that reveal the secret of traditional bread and pie baking. Fun for young and old. See www.bisschopsmolen.nl<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Bonnenfantenmuseum<\/h3>\n

Old and contemporary art exhibited together. In a very special building by the famous Italian architect Aldo Rossi. Thanks to its 28-meter-high, peculiar rocket shape, this museum is one of the landmarks of the surrounding area. Typically one of those must-see<\/em> attractions. The city of Maastricht was in the European spotlight around 1992 due to the significant European Treaty. Hence the temporary creative outburst in the early nineties, which among other things, led to this museum.<\/p>\n

Kasteelru\u00efne Lichtenberg<\/h3>\n

The Sint Pietersberg provides pleasant entertainment after a day of sightseeing. The panoramic view alone is worth a small climb. This hill houses Fort Sint-Pieter and Maastricht Underground: access to the mysterious world in the Limburg caves. One of the attractions that make Maastricht so enjoyable for children.<\/p>\n

Maastricht Underground<\/h3>\n

Curious about the hidden part of the city? Underground, time stands still, and history comes to life. You get a tour where you learn all about Maastricht’s tunnel system. This is definitely a must if you’re a fan of underground history.<\/p>\n

Vintage shopping is all the rage nowadays (sustainability), and it’s definitely recommended in Wyck. Here you’ll find numerous shops selling the most beautiful vintage items. Nowadays, you haven’t been to Maastricht if you haven’t visited Wyck!<\/p>\n

Natuurhistorisch Museum<\/h3>\n

Located in a former monastery complex in the centrally located Jerkerkwartier district. The NHM deserves a mention due to its unique collection of chalk fossils. Did you know that the history of Mestreech<\/em> \u2014 as the locals pronounce their birthplace \u2014 dates back to the Stone Age? With more than 500,000 objects in the fields of geology, paleontology, flora, and fauna from the South Limburg region, this museum has everything to transport you back to prehistoric times. Including the popular stuffed rat king from the 19th century, a hit with children!<\/p>\n

Stadsbrouwerij Maastricht<\/h3>\n

This brewery is located in a historically rich area. Here you can take a brewery tour where you learn all about the history of the brewery and the different flavors. Additionally, you can, of course, enjoy a good glass of beer and some delicious dishes. It’s within walking distance of the Vrijthof, and on the terrace, you have a fantastic view of the Maas! Are you a fan of delicious beers? Then this is definitely a must! With no less than 16 different taps, there’s plenty of choice.<\/p>\n

GaiaZOO<\/h3>\n

Are you visiting Maastricht with your children? Then this is, of course, incredibly fun to do! This zoo is located near Maastricht, in Kerkrade. In 2012, this zoo was named the ‘Most Beautiful Zoo in the Benelux’ for the fourth time. In this zoo, you can admire many beautiful and unique animal species. Additionally, there is a play paradise for children, the DinoDome. The children can play and climb here. You can also enjoy delicious Limburg pies and coffee!<\/p>\n
