De Sint-Vituskathedraal is een 14e eeuwse kerk binnen de Praagse Burcht<\/a>. Deze bezienswaardigheid is er eentje die hoog op je lijstje zal staan tijdens je stedentrip naar Praag. Lees snel verder en ontdek waarom.<\/p>\n

\"Fietsen<\/a><\/p>\n

De Sint-Vituskathedraal is niet in \u00e9\u00e9n dag gebouwd<\/h2>\n

De eerste restanten van dit gebedshuis stammen al uit het jaar 926. De kerk werd gebouwd in opdracht van de vrome koning Wenceslaus de Heilige toen hij zo\u2019n 20 jaar oud was. De kathedraal zoals we die vandaag de dag zien stamt vooral uit de 14e eeuw, maar er zijn delen uit verschillende tijdperken.
\nIn 1344 gaf keizer Karel IV de opdracht voor een grote renovatie. Als eerste werd een nieuwe kapel gebouwd, de Sint Wenceslas kapel. De beste man was ondertussen tot sint omgetoverd en kreeg daarom zijn eigen stukje in de kerk. Zijn relieken liggen ook in de Sint-Vituskathedraal.<\/p>\n

\"Details
\nDoor verschillende oorlogen kwam de constructie van de kerk vrij vaak stil te liggen. Daardoor werden grote delen pas in de 19e eeuw gebouwd. Het nieuwste deel is zelfs uit de 20e eeuw want de kathedraal werd pas officieel af verklaard in 1929.<\/p>\n

De kerk vandaag de dag<\/h2>\n

Al met al heeft de bouw van de Sint-Vituskathedraal dus zo\u2019n 600 jaar geduurd.
\nDe kerk is voornamelijk in gotische stijl gebouwd met glas in loodramen en drie torens. De toren met de grootste klok is maar liefst 99 meter hoog en is gratis te bezoeken als je een tripje door de Praagse Burcht onderneemt. Een leuke manier om dit stuk van de stad te leren kennen is tijdens de Praag Fietstour<\/a>. Je gaat dan met een ervaren Nederlandssprekende gids langs alle bezienswaardigheden van de stad en zo ontdek je Praag op originele manier. Het is de ideale introductie tot de Tsjechische hoofdstad.<\/p>\n

Neem na de rondleiding vooral even de tijd om de Sint-Vituskathedraal van binnen te bekijken. Het enorme schip dat verlicht wordt in de kleuren van het glas in lood is indrukwekkend en ook het orgel is de moeite waard om te bezichtigen.<\/p>\n

\"Interieur<\/p>\n

Wie was die Vitus dan?<\/h2>\n

De Sint-Vituskathedraal is uiteraard vernoemd naar iemand die Vitus heette. De volledige naam van de kerk is overigens Metropolitn\u00ed katedr\u00e1la svat\u00e9ho V\u00edta, V\u00e1clava a Vojt\u011bcha<\/a> wat zich laat vertalen naar metropool kathedraal van de heilige Vitus, Wenceslaus en Adalbert. De belangrijkste van die drie is dus sint Vitus. Deze derde eeuwse Siciliaan werd beschouwd als een van de 14 heilige helpers die ziektes kunnen genezen. Wenceslaus had enkele relieken van de heilige weten te bemachtigen en dit was reden genoeg voor hem om enkele religieuze gebouwen naar hem te vernoemen. Je hoeft niet religieus te zijn om te kunnen waarderen wat Vitus voor de stad Praag heeft betekend, de Praagse Burcht zou niet hetzelfde zijn zonder.<\/p>\n
