A rundown of must-visit attractions in Bergen
Bergen has so much to offer! Read on to discover all the fascinating attractions:
1. Bryggen
Bryggen, with its colorful wooden houses along the old quay, is one of the most famous spots in Bergen. This old Hanseatic trading wharf is a UNESCO World Heritage site and tells the story of Bergen’s maritime trade. Cycle past this historic site and soak up the atmosphere. Want to know more? Visit one of the museums at Bryggen. The area is free to visit, but you need a ticket for the museums.

2. Fløibanen funicular
A ride on the Fløibanen funicular to the top of Mount Fløyen not only offers a relaxing break from cycling but also a breathtaking view over the city and the surrounding fjords. Purchase your ticket for a day tour in Bergen, which includes a fjord cruise, historical city tour, and the Fløien Funicular.
3. Cool off in Magic Ice Bar
During my visit to Bergen, I discovered the Magic Ice Bar and I absolutely must share it with you. Put on your winter poncho and gloves (provided by the bar) and you’re all set! Admire Norwegian art with an ice-cold drink in hand. Buy your tickets online and gain access to the ice bar and the room with ice sculptures.
4. KODE art museums
KODE is one of the largest museums for art, craft, and design in Scandinavia and consists of four different buildings. Here you can find everything from classic Norwegian art to international masterpieces. Cycle to one of the KODE museums and dive into the impressive collections.

5. Bergenhus Festning
Located at the entrance of the harbor, Bergenhus Festning is one of the best-preserved medieval fortresses in Norway. The fortress contains some of the oldest and most impressive buildings in the city, including the Håkonshallen and Rosenkrantztårnet. Access to the grounds is free, but a ticket is required to visit the buildings inside. Check the opening hours online, especially outside the high season.
6. The fish market
Norway is a fish country, and that means you shouldn’t miss the chance to taste fresh fish! I visited the famous Bergen Fish Market, located in the heart of the city, and it was the perfect place for me to soak up the atmosphere and eat all kinds of fresh fish and seafood. Besides seafood, you’ll also find other Norwegian delicacies here. Delicious!

7. Troldhaugen – Edvard Grieg Museum
A highly recommended visit is to the house of the famous Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg, now a museum. This house is located just outside the city center, and I rented a bike, the easiest and fastest way to get there. Take a look into the life and work of Grieg, with tours of his well-preserved villa, his composition hut, and the beautiful gardens. Tickets for the museum can be purchased on-site or online.
8. Ulriken
If you’re looking for a more adventurous outing, cycle to the base of Ulriken, the highest of the seven mountains surrounding Bergen. From here, you can take the cable car to the top for a spectacular view over the city.
Tip: make sure to wear suitable clothing for the changeable weather and check the opening hours of the cable car in advance.
