Golden Gate Bridge
Perhaps the most famous bridge in the world. This red icon connects the city with Marin County, north of the bay. The Golden Gate Bridge is nearly 3 kilometers long and 227 meters high. It took almost 4 years to build this giant. The designer gave the bridge the color International Orange so it would stand out during foggy periods.
On the San Francisco side of the bridge, you’ll find the Presidio. This used to be a military base but is now a vast public park. Here, you can relax in the wooded area or play a round of golf. You can also enjoy views of the bridge. However, the best view is from Marin Headlands, on the other side of the bridge. From this high point, you get a stunning view of the city and the bridge, a must-see San Francisco attraction.
Bike tour along the Golden Gate Bridge
The best way to get acquainted with the most iconic bridge in the United States is during the San Francisco Golden Gate bike tour. Our experienced guide will take you on comfortable bikes along the bridge and several other interesting San Francisco attractions that will be discussed later in this article. It’s the ideal introduction to Frisco, as the locals call the city.
Alcatraz
Ironically, nowadays everyone wants to go to Alcatraz. It used to be quite different. Not surprising, as it was once a notorious prison. Alcatraz was known as the only prison from which escape was impossible. It is located on an island in the San Francisco Bay. So even if you outsmarted the guards, you still had to undertake an almost impossible swim to reach safety. Rumor has it that only one escape attempt was successful.
You will hear about these kinds of facts and more during the tour of Alcatraz, as it is now open to the public. The evening tour is especially an interesting option, although it can be a bit spooky at times. If you want to visit Alcatraz, we recommend buying a ticket online, as they sell out quickly!
Fisherman’s Wharf
The Fisherman’s Wharf is a harbor area that is now one of the most visited San Francisco attractions. Pier 39, in particular, is a major draw. It has been transformed into an area full of shops and eateries. From Fisherman’s Wharf, you have a good view of Alcatraz, the Golden Gate, and also the other big bridge, the Bay Bridge. From here, you can also catch the famous cable car, which is a defining feature of the city’s landscape.
Chinatown
This district in San Francisco is the second-largest Chinatown in the world. Only New York has a larger district. Chinatown in San Francisco is an impressive area, especially if you love Asian cuisine. This district, 8 blocks long and 3 blocks wide, may have the architecture found throughout San Francisco, but the atmosphere is 100% Asian. For a moment, you feel like you’re on a completely different continent. Since the city’s inception, the Chinese have played an important role, and you can still feel that influence today.
Haight Ashbury
This San Francisco attraction became especially famous at the end of the 1960s. Around 1967, the hippie culture emerged here. Haight Ashbury was the epicenter of the Flower Power movement. Today, you’ll find many boutiques with vintage clothing, music stores, and bookstores. It’s still quite hippie here. The colorful houses make this a very pleasant neighborhood to stroll around.
On the edge of Haight Ashbury, you’ll find Golden Gate Park. This enormous park is 5 kilometers long and nearly a kilometer wide. It’s a wonderful place to relax among the beautiful green fields and ponds. From Haight Ashbury, you can walk all the way to the ocean. At the end of this park stand some well-known structures, two Dutch windmills! To feel right at home, enjoy the Dutch Windmill from the Queen Wilhelmina Tulip Garden.
Lombard Street
Anyone who thinks American cities are all about straight blocks has clearly never been to Lombard Street. This street descends so steeply that hairpin turns have been installed. This makes Lombard Street a unique road that attracts many visitors. Thanks to the charming gardens between the curves, it’s a quaint San Francisco attraction you won’t want to miss. The world’s most winding street is easily accessible on foot or by car.
Alamo Square
Alamo Square in the Alamo neighborhood is best known for the Painted Ladies. These painted ladies are a row of houses that gained fame in the Netherlands as the houses in the intro of the popular series Full House. Because this city is so hilly, you can see the rest of Downtown San Francisco very well behind the houses.
If you want to get a truly beautiful view of the city, we recommend the next San Francisco attraction on the list, namely Dolores Park.
Dolores Park and The Mission
From Dolores Park, you indeed have the best views of the city. The park itself is not too large, but people love to come here to relax and enjoy the beautiful view. Once you’ve taken it all in, it’s time to visit The Mission. This is a predominantly Latino neighborhood, and you’ll find the best tacos and other typical South American dishes here. Foodies will love The Mission, as it’s bursting with restaurants. If you’re looking to get a tattoo, this is also the place to be. You’ll see a considerable number of tattoo shops as you stroll through this neighborhood.
Sausalito
On the other side of the Golden Gate Bridge, it’s also beautiful. Besides the stunning view of Marin Headlands, you have other interesting attractions right after the bridge. One of them is Sausalito. This village is located on the bay and is too charming to miss. You’ll quickly notice that the quality of life is very high in Sausalito. This is where the hippies from the 70s came to live after making quite a bit of money from their businesses. To live in Sausalito, you need a lot of money and a hippie background. This makes it the ideal place to relax if the city itself is a bit too busy for you.

Muir Woods National Park and Mount Tamalpais
For true tranquility, go a bit further than Sausalito. Just a few kilometers away, you’ll find Muir Woods National Park. This park is known for its enormous trees. They aren’t the broad sequoias you’ll find here, but rather the so-called Redwoods. These trees can grow up to 120 meters tall. Walking through here, you’ll really feel small again. This forest is well-maintained, and the trail you follow takes you past some beautiful spots.

If you want to venture even further out of the city, right after Muir Woods is Mount Tamalpais. This mountain is 784 meters high, and from the highest point, you can see the entire bay. This way, you have a view of the city, but you also see beautiful small beaches and impressive forests. Perfect for a day of relaxation outside the city.
Now you know which San Francisco attractions you can add to your list. This way, you can start planning your vacation!
