Nerja is an ideal day trip destination when visiting top spots in Andalusia, such as Malaga or Granada. But even on its own, Nerja is well worth a visit. This small town on the Costa del Sol has quite a lot to offer. And because it isn’t a very large city, you can easily visit all of Nerja’s attractions in just a few hours by bike during the Highlights Bike Tour from Baja Bikes. Read on to discover all the must-sees of this top destination.

The Caves of Nerja
The absolute top attraction in Nerja is the famous caves. One of Spain’s most spectacular natural wonders, they are very popular, so be sure to buy your tickets for the Caves of Nerja in advance. When you step into the coolness of these impressive caves, it feels like entering another world. The caves are known for their prehistoric rock paintings, dating back as far as 20,000 years, making them of great historical and archaeological importance. I found it truly awe-inspiring!
Another reason to visit the caves is the ‘Festival Internacional de Música Cueva de Nerja’. This dance and music festival takes place from mid-June to mid-August, and I found it to be a unique experience!
Balcón de Europa
The Balcón de Europa, located in the heart of Nerja, offers the most stunning views of the Mediterranean Sea imaginable. This special viewpoint, once a fortress meant to ward off pirates, is now a symbol of peace and beauty. I personally love to grab a seat at a terrace here, or (for better prices) a few streets away.

The square around the Balcón de Europa is lively, with street musicians, artists, and vendors adding to the delightful atmosphere. Balcón de Europa is part of the city’s public space, so visiting is free of charge.

Iglesia El Salvador
A visit to Nerja isn’t complete without seeing the Iglesia El Salvador. This beautiful 17th-century church, located next to the Balcón de Europa, is a work of art both inside and out. Entry is free, but a donation is appreciated.
Playa Burriana
To be honest, Nerja isn’t the very best place on the Costa del Sol for a beach day, including swimming. But that mostly speaks to the many great alternatives in this part of Spain. Playa Burriana, Nerja’s most popular beach, is still well worth a visit. This wide beach, awarded the Blue Flag for its excellent water quality and facilities, offers everything you need to enjoy the beach.

You can rent sunbeds and umbrellas, engage in water sports, or simply relax and enjoy the Mediterranean sun. Along the promenade, you’ll find plenty of delicious restaurants and cozy bars, perfect for a seaside lunch or a refreshing drink after a long day of sunbathing.
