Monasterio de San Jerónimo
When you think of Granada, you think of monasteries and cathedrals. The most famous monastery in Granada is the Monasterio de San Jerónimo. The monastery was built in the 16th century. For several centuries, monks from the Order of Saint Jerome lived here. In 1810, Napoleon invaded Andalusia and plundered many monasteries, including the Monasterio de San Jerónimo. The monks had to flee and the Order had to leave the monastery.
More than a century and a half later, in 1973, the Order regained possession of the monastery. Since the end of the last century, a religious community of women has lived here. Only nuns and no male members of the Order are allowed to live here. You can visit the monastery freely. A visit to the monastery is definitely worthwhile. Not only to admire the beautiful building from the outside, but the large art gallery inside the monastery is also breathtakingly beautiful. You can admire artworks from the 16th century. The monastery also displays more contemporary works by local painters.
Granada Cathedral
