When I arrived in Albufeira, Portugal, I was immediately struck by its impressive location. The city is situated on the southern coast of the Algarve, overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, with golden beaches and high cliffs that sometimes appear almost red in the sun. What many people don’t know is that Albufeira was once part of the Moorish empire. The name even comes from Arabic, meaning something like “castle by the sea.” You can still see traces of this in the old town, where the narrow streets and whitewashed houses give off an almost Mediterranean vibe.

The weather in Albufeira makes the destination even more appealing. With more than 300 sunny days a year, you’re almost always in for good weather. I found that even outside the high season, the temperatures are still very pleasant, making it an ideal spot for a spring or autumn trip.
The best activities in Albufeira
1. Explore the old town
My first stop was the old town of Albufeira. Here, you can still feel the atmosphere of the former fishing village. As I walked through the streets, I came across small restaurants, local shops, and cozy squares. In the evening, this place transforms completely: it becomes lively yet remains charming. It’s an ideal spot to start with a quiet dinner before possibly diving into the nightlife.
In the old town, you’ll find plenty of cozy restaurants where you can taste typical Portuguese dishes, often with a view of the sea. I often opted for fresh fish or a cataplana, a traditional stew that’s highly recommended. Grilled sardines are also a common sight on the menu. In between, I couldn’t resist grabbing a pastel de nata from a local bakery — simple, but so delicious.
What I also appreciated is that in Albufeira, you can find something for every budget: from simple local eateries to more upscale restaurants along the coast. My tip is to dine a bit outside the busiest tourist streets, where you’ll often find the most authentic spots. And if you enjoy a drink, there are plenty of beach bars and rooftop spots where you can perfectly end the day with a cocktail as the sun sets.
2. Discover the beaches of Albufeira
The coastline is undoubtedly one of the biggest attractions of Albufeira. What I found remarkable is that there are more than 25 beaches in the area, each with its own character.
Praia da Falésia might be the most famous, with its long stretch of sand and impressive cliffs. Praia dos Pescadores is located right in the center and is perfect if you’re looking for some buzz. Personally, I found Praia de São Rafael one of the most beautiful because it’s quieter and the rock formations look almost surreal.

A small tip from personal experience: some beaches have rocky sections, so water shoes can be handy if you want to explore everything.
3. Take a boat trip to the Benagil Cave
One of the absolute highlights in Albufeira is a boat trip along the coast. During this trip, you’ll see amazing ‘secret’ beaches and impressive caves, including the famous Benagil Cave. What I especially loved is how rugged and pure the coast still is here. It’s truly something you can only fully experience from the water.
4. Discover Albufeira by bike with Baja Bikes
Personally, one of the best ways I found to get to know the city was the Baja Bikes tour in Albufeira. Especially since Albufeira is more than just the center, it’s ideal to go out with a guide. During the tour, you pass through different neighborhoods, beaches, and viewpoints, while hearing interesting stories about the city. This gave me a much better understanding of the history and the surroundings.

Especially if you’re just arriving, this is a smart way to quickly get an overview of all the attractions in Albufeira.
5. Nightlife on The Strip
Albufeira is also known for its nightlife. The Strip is the place where you’ll find bars and clubs that stay open late. What I personally liked was starting the evening quietly in the old town and then heading to The Strip.
6. Water sports and action
For those who love action, there are plenty of activities in Albufeira to be found. Think jet skiing, parasailing, or kayaking along the coast. With the warm climate and calm sea in the summer, this is the perfect place to try something new.
7. Discover the Algarve from Albufeira
8. Taste the Portuguese cuisine
Food is an essential part of your trip. In Albufeira, you can still enjoy much of the traditional Portuguese cuisine. I tried cataplana here, a delicious fish stew, and of course, I couldn’t skip the famous pastel de nata.
I also tried a few restaurants that stand out a bit more than the standard tourist spots. For example, I dined at Cabana Fresca, right in the old town, where you can enjoy a lovely terrace and excellent fish dishes. For a more special evening, I found Vila Joya Sea truly a recommendation — a bit pricier, but the location and quality make it worthwhile. If you’re looking for something local and authentic, Adega do David is a place where many locals go. Here, you eat simply but incredibly well, especially if you love meat and traditional Portuguese dishes. For fish lovers, A Ruína is also a great spot, especially for its view over the beach.
What struck me most in Albufeira is that the best places are often just outside the busiest streets. My tip is to walk a few minutes further than the first row of restaurants — there you’ll often find better quality and a more local atmosphere.

What truly completed my trip to Albufeira was ending the day on the cliffs. Especially at Praia da Falésia, the sunset is breathtaking: as the sun slowly sinks into the ocean, the rocks turn deep orange and red. It’s one of those moments when everything seems to stand still — and that feeling is exactly why Albufeira is a destination I’d return to in a heartbeat.
