Fuerteventura is one of the largest of the Canary Islands. Although it is located at the latitude of Africa, you can fly there directly from the Netherlands in under 4 hours.
Fuerteventura enjoys about 300 sunny days a year, making it a popular destination not only in summer but also in the off-season. Each year, approximately 2 million foreign tourists visit this island. It is the oldest Canary Island, formed over 20 million years ago by a volcanic eruption.
Remnants of Fuerteventura’s volcanic past are still visible on the 25 km long volcanic beaches that are black. Generally, Fuerteventura has a flat landscape with expansive sand dunes, high cliffs, and winding escarpments.
With an area of 1,660 km², Fuerteventura has much to offer, with plenty to see and do.

Water sports and especially surfing
Fuerteventura, which literally means strong wind, is a paradise for surfers. The island is almost always windy. The wind is predominant in the north, while in the south it can sometimes be barely noticeable. This makes the north of the island the most perfect and also the most popular spot for surfers. It’s not called the Hawaii of Europe for nothing.
Some well-known surf beaches are;
The Correlejo dune area, which has several suitable surf spots. This place is also extremely popular among tourist surfers.
Additionally, El Cotillo beach is also very well-known and loved. It is located on the northwest coast and has waves that reach 2 meters high all year round.
Another popular spot is El Hierro, accessible via the village of Majenicho. Here you will find white sandy beaches with various surfing opportunities for every level.
Cofete is another spectacular beach located on the west coast of the island. Here, the waves reach a height of 3 meters throughout the year. Because this beach is located near a nature reserve, it is popular with vacationers seeking peace and nature.
Are you a beginner? No worries! In many places, you will find surf schools where you can learn kite or wave surfing.
Hike to the highest point
Are you sporty?
Then a hike to the highest point is a great attraction on Fuerteventura. This is located at 807 meters above the mountain Pico de la Zarza. It takes 5 hours to climb to the top, which is a long but cool hike. Another way is to replace part of the walk with a jeep ride.
As you ascend during the hike, you see the landscape change. You also see beautiful views over the beaches of Cofete and the Atlantic Ocean. Still in doubt? It’s definitely worth it!

Hike on the volcano
North of Lajeres, a walk begins to the top of the Calderon Hondo volcano. This volcano is one of the best-preserved on the island. At the top of the volcano, there is a platform from which you can view the crater well.
Did you know it is 70 meters deep? Truly impressive! Additionally, from above, you can enjoy a fantastic view. For example, you can also see Lanzarote. The hiking route to Calderon Hondo is not very easy, but certainly a very fun active tip.
The lighthouses of Fuerteventura
The lighthouses of Fuerteventura are an important part of the island. The most impressive and well-known is the Faro de Jandia. It is located on the southern side of the island.
But what is so special about this lighthouse when there are so many?
From this tower, there is not only a breathtaking view, but there is also something magical to see. When the wind blows over the waves of the Atlantic Ocean, light arcs in various rainbow colors form above the crests of the waves.
The largest lighthouse on the island is Faro de Morro Jable at Playa del Marorral. It mainly has a functional role as it serves as a guide for ships in the dark.
Another well-known lighthouse is the Punta de la Entallada. It is especially known for the great view over the clear ocean it offers.
