1. The Old Quarter
Hanoi’s Old Quarter is truly the beating heart of this historic city. The narrow streets filled with scooters, street vendors, and centuries-old buildings create such a cozy atmosphere! Explore the 36 streets by bike, each named after the original goods sold there, from silk to silver. During my bike tour, the local guide shared all sorts of interesting facts about the buildings and history here.
Tip: Wear comfortable clothing, as it can be warm and humid here.
2. Hoan Kiem Lake
A lake in the middle of the city? Sounds surprising, right? A visit to Hanoi is not complete without a stop at Hoan Kiem Lake. This tranquil water was one of my favorite spots (and also for locals and many other tourists). Take a break from the bustling city, enjoy a lovely walk around the lake, and cross the red Huc Bridge to the Ngoc Son Temple on the small island. Be sure to visit at sunrise or sunset, and you’ll see the most beautiful colors in the sky and enjoy a fantastic view.
3. Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum
The Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum is perhaps the most impressive complex in the entire city of Hanoi. Here, you can see the preserved body of the Vietnamese leader. The atmosphere is respectful and calm, but with strict security. A visit to this mausoleum offers a deeply moving experience and provides insight into modern Vietnamese culture and history.
Note: There is a strict dress code; covered shoulders and knees are required.
4. Temple of Literature and National University
The Temple of Literature in Hanoi, established in 1070 as Vietnam’s first national university, honors education and Confucianism. The complex includes multiple courtyards and gardens where you can see the well-preserved architecture and enjoy the peaceful surroundings. Tickets are available at the entrance.
Advice: Wear respectful clothing when entering the temples.
5. West Lake
I was already amazed by Hoan Kiem Lake, but when I saw the twenty times larger West Lake, I didn’t know where to look! West Lake is the largest lake in Hanoi and offers a delightful escape from the city’s hustle and bustle. Enjoy the fresh air and beautiful views, stop by one of the many cafes or restaurants for a drink or a delicious meal. The area is also home to some important religious buildings, such as the Tran Quoc Pagoda, one of the oldest Buddhist pagodas in Vietnam. Definitely worth a visit!
6. Hanoi Opera House
Inspired by the Paris Opera, the Hanoi Opera House is known for its impressive French colonial architecture. Located in Hanoi’s French Quarter, it’s a hotspot for culture lovers. Do you love opera, ballet, or symphonies? There’s something for everyone here! Check the schedule and buy your tickets in advance for an unforgettable night out.
7. Dong Xuan Market
For an authentic local experience, visit Dong Xuan Market, the largest covered market in Hanoi. Dive into the hustle and bustle of this lively market where you can find everything from fresh produce to souvenirs and clothing. It’s an excellent place to taste local delicacies. A typical snack in Hanoi is ‘Bánh cuốn’; thin, steamed rice pancakes filled with a mixture of ground pork, mushrooms, and served with fried onions and fresh herbs. Enjoy your meal!
