This city is bursting with highlights. From ancient ruins and romantic walking routes to bustling squares and unique museums – there’s always something to discover. Below I share my favorite sights in Heidelberg that you definitely shouldn’t miss.
Heidelberg Castle
The number one among Heidelberg sights! From the castle, you have a magnificent view over the city, the Neckar, and the surrounding hills. When I was there, I walked leisurely through the old ruins and could completely imagine how the princes and residents lived here centuries ago.

I really recommend taking the funicular up: it not only saves energy, but you can also enjoy the view and take photos along the way. Once at the top, you can wander around for hours, explore the historic halls and towers, and even see a piece of the famous large wine barrel! Did you know that the Heidelberger Fass is one of the largest historic wine barrels in the world?
Philosophenweg
The Philosophenweg is located on the other side of the river and is one of my favorite walking routes in Heidelberg. As you walk along the old walls and beautiful gardens, you enjoy what is perhaps the most beautiful view over the city and the castle. Along the way, you’ll encounter beautiful villas and small botanical gardens, and there are several benches where you can sit for a moment to admire the sunset over the Neckar. Tip: find a nice picnic spot here or stop at one of the cafés along the route, so you can really make a relaxed afternoon of it. It’s also a popular spot for photography, so don’t forget your camera!
Personal tip: Café Schafheutle, a cozy café that has existed since 1865. It’s located on Hauptstraße, right near the entrance to the Philosophenweg. The café is known for its homemade pastries, including the famous Schafheutle Torte, a delicious combination of nougat cream, marzipan, and almond meringue. According to local legend, it was even the favorite café of former Chancellor Helmut Kohl during his student days in Heidelberg!
Alte Brücke & the Altstadt
The Alte Brücke is for me the ultimate symbol of Heidelberg center. When I walked across it, I immediately felt the atmosphere of the city: the mix of history and coziness. On the other side lies the Altstadt, with narrow streets, boutiques, cafés, and terraces full of students and tourists.
One of my favorite hidden spots in the Altstadt is the Hölländer Hof. This beautiful hotel is located directly on the Alte Brücke and offers a stunning view of the river and the Philosophenweg. The terrace is perfect for a peaceful break with a cup of coffee and a piece of Schwarzwälder kirschtorte!
Additionally, there’s the Steingasse, a narrow street that leads you directly to the Heiliggeistkirche. Along the way, you’ll pass Casa del Caffè, a small Italian café where you can enjoy a cappuccino with Cantuccini.
If you’re looking for a busier terrace, Vetter’s Brauhaus is highly recommended. This historic brewery restaurant is located between the Heiliggeistkirche and the Alte Brücke and is known for its craft beers and German specialties. It’s a popular spot among both students and tourists!
Boat tour on the Neckar river
I can really recommend a boat tour on the Neckar river – it gives a completely different perspective on Heidelberg. During the boat trip you sail past centuries-old castles, rolling hills and picturesque villages in the Heidelberg area. I personally loved sitting back, taking photos and admiring the city from the water.
Tip: choose this boat tour with a drink on board, which makes it extra relaxing and a perfect way to completely unwind after a day full of walks and bike tours through the city.

One of my favorite things to do in Heidelberg was the bike tour with Baja Bikes. Within a few hours you cycle past all of Heidelberg’s highlights, while a local guide passionately tells you about the city’s history and hidden gems. It’s a relaxed way to see a lot in a short time – and surprisingly easy, because Heidelberg is quite flat. Absolutely recommended!

How do I get to Heidelberg?
I personally prefer traveling to Heidelberg by train, because it’s fast and comfortable. From Frankfurt or Stuttgart you’re in the city in about an hour, and you step out right in the center. If you want to be more flexible or explore the Heidelberg area, then the bus to Heidelberg is a good alternative, with multiple routes from surrounding cities. Of course you can also come by car; that’s convenient if you want to explore the castles, vineyards and nature around Heidelberg. Park at one of the P+R locations just outside the center and walk into the city – this way you immediately enjoy the atmosphere without parking stress!
Restaurants in Heidelberg
For the most delicious local dishes you really need to visit the traditional restaurants in Heidelberg. I personally love starting with a hearty Sauerbraten or Maultaschen at one of the cozy spots in the Altstadt. Don’t forget to taste the regional wine either, because Heidelberg is located in the middle of a wine region! My favorite restaurants include Vetter’s Brauhaus for craft beer and German classics, and Schnitzelbank for a cozy, authentic atmosphere. For something lighter and more modern you can visit Restaurant Essighaus, a super cozy restaurant with excellent local dishes.

Whether you love luxury or are looking for a cozy boutique hotel, Heidelberg has plenty of options. Tip: choose hotels in the Altstadt: everything is within walking distance and you’re right in the middle of the city’s lively atmosphere. Hotels along the Neckar river are especially nice, with beautiful views and quiet rooms.
