When I first travelled to Lefkas (also known as Lefkada), I had no idea this Ionian island would be so surprisingly diverse. You simply drive there via a bridge from the mainland – which feels almost unfairly easy for an island with such beaches. Think: bright white cliffs, turquoise water, pine forests and villages where time seems to stand still.

Whether you’re travelling with your family, with your partner or exploring solo, Lefkas offers something for everyone. And yes, I swapped my flip-flops for hiking boots, a snorkel and of course a bike – because this island simply begs to be discovered actively!

Nidri waterfall – a refreshing surprise
If you’ve ever heard the sound of flowing water in the Greek summer, you know how magical it sounds. The Dimosari waterfall, near Nidri, lies in a gorge full of greenery. The hike there (approx. 3.5 km) is lovely – even when it’s hot, because the path is partly shaded. I literally stuck my head under the water there. Wonderfully refreshing!
My tip: Go early in the day or just before sunset. Less crowded and better light for photos.
Lefkas beaches – sand, cliffs and turquoise water
Lefkas (Lefkada) is known for its breathtaking beaches with crystal-clear blue water and impressive cliffs. Below you’ll find an overview of some of the most beautiful beaches you definitely shouldn’t miss during your visit:
| Beach | Description |
|---|---|
| Porto Katsiki | Probably the most famous sandy beach in Lefkas. You have to tackle some stairs, but the view is more than worth the climb. |
| Egremni | Longer and quieter beach. The boat trip there (or the descent) is an experience in itself. |
| Nidri Beach & beaches near Lefkas town | Perfect for families with children: shallow water, calm, and cosy tavernas nearby. |
Snorkelling & kayaking – exploring the blue cave
One of my favourite excursions in Lefkas was absolutely the kayak tour to the blue cave. You paddle along rock walls and then float above crystal-clear water – snorkel on, and you swim among fish as if you’re in an aquarium. And yes, there’s a Greek snack along the way. I got stuffed vine leaves and olives, the best olives I’ve ever had!

Tasting olive oil at the Fabbrica Museum
In this small but lovely olive museum in Lefkas town I learned how olive oil used to be pressed with stone mills. The tour is short but powerful, and you get to taste. (My favourite: the mild ‘late harvest’ oil.)

Bike tour with Baja Bikes
In Lefkas I did something I normally always do during city trips: a bike tour! And I’m glad I did. The tour from Baja Bikes takes you not only along the coast, but also to villages you’d otherwise just ride past. The guide told stories about local traditions and pointed out a hidden bay I would never have found myself.

Lefkas town: footbridges, markets and myths
The island’s capital has a pleasant buzz. Think: colourful houses, fishing boats, and narrow alleys where you’ll suddenly stumble upon a charming bookshop or coffee bar. Don’t miss a visit to the Fort of Agia Mavra or the ancient Faneromeni monastery.

Tip: Take the wooden footbridge just before sunset – magical views over the lagoon!
Watersports in Vasiliki: where the wind always blows
Are you a fan of windsurfing or stand-up paddling? Then Vasiliki is your spot. Thanks to a constant thermal wind (the locals call it “Eric”), you can hit the water almost every day here. Even as a beginner, I found it super accessible and fun!
Sunset at Cape Doukato (Sappho’s cliff)
If there’s one place where nature leaves you speechless, it’s here. Cape Doukato, also known as Sappho’s cliff, sits at the southern tip of Lefkas. You stand on a limestone cliff, dozens of metres above the sea. The sun slowly sinks below the horizon. Goosebumps guaranteed.
Day trip to Meganisi: a little island to fall in love with
Take a small boat (bookable in Nidri) to Meganisi. You’ll arrive at a tiny harbour full of colourful fishing boats, then discover sheltered beaches perfect for snorkelling. Combine this with a visit to the private island of Skorpios (once owned by Aristotle Onassis!) if it’s included in your tour.
