Historical sights in Nijmegen
The Valkhof & Valkhof Museum
The Valkhof is truly a place you must visit when discovering Nijmegen. A Roman castellum once stood here, and later a castle of Charlemagne. Now you’ll find the Valkhof Museum, where you can view archaeological finds from Roman times and the Middle Ages. The museum is located in Valkhof Park, a beautiful city park with an impressive view over the Waal River.
Tip: walk past the old Barbarossa ruins and discover how this site has played a central role in the city’s history throughout the centuries.
Stevenskerk & tower climb
The Stevenskerk is the oldest and largest church in Nijmegen. Built in the 13th century, it’s an impressive Gothic structure with beautiful stained glass windows and an imposing chandelier.
My tip: for a panoramic view over the city, you really must climb the Stevenskerk tower. On clear days you can even see Germany! Inside the church, concerts and exhibitions are regularly organized, making the Stevenskerk not only a historical but also a cultural highlight.
Hunnerpark & the old city walls
Hunnerpark is located on the edge of the city center and is a peaceful place to relax. Here you can still see remnants of the old city walls, dating back to the Middle Ages. It’s a lovely spot for a walk and in summer absolutely my favorite place to picnic! Hunnerpark borders the Belvédère, a historic watchtower that you can still climb for a unique view of the city and the river.

The Waalkade is a lively spot where events take place throughout the year, such as the Valkhof Festival in summer. Here you can enjoy alternative music. Additionally, De Goffert is a popular location for major concerts by international artists. During the summer months, open-air performances and cozy summer festivals also take place along the Waal, truly a wonderful atmosphere!

At the muZIEum, children learn in an interactive way what it’s like to be blind. During this unique experience, they are guided by blind or visually impaired guides and discover the world in a completely new way. An impressive outing that is both educational and fun!
