Here are our 5 favorite attractions in Leuven
This city should not be missed during a trip through Flanders. Thanks to the university and its medieval character, it’s a delightful place to visit. Be sure to check out the following highlights.
- Leuven Town Hall
- St. Peter’s Church
- Great Beguinage
- Old Market Square
- Hortus Botanicus Lovaniensis
Leuven Town Hall
By far the most impressive building in Leuven is the old town hall. During a renovation of the historic center in the 15th century, it was decided to build this Gothic city hall. It was constructed in two phases, taking about 30 years to complete. You don’t need to be an expert in Gothic architecture to recognize the historic town hall. Adorned with statues and featuring several beautiful towers, this building immediately catches the eye as you stroll through this vibrant student city. The Town Hall is located on the Grote Markt, close to the next Leuven attraction.

St. Peter’s Church
The large church in this delightful Belgian city stands right in the middle of the Grote Markt and is thus unmissable. It might be a bit of an unusual church as it looks somewhat different from what you’re used to seeing in other Belgian cities. This is because the construction was never fully completed. The plans for this Brabantine Gothic work included two towers, but after about 600 years, they are still missing. Chances are they’ve abandoned that plan. What is completed, however, is the interior. The nave of St. Peter’s Church is beautiful in its simplicity. The stained glass adds some color, but otherwise, the somberness is most noticeable.

Great Beguinage
Just a bit south of the historic center, you’ll find the Great Beguinage. This is a large district that has remained entirely in its old style. What stands out is the space and the abundant greenery that these beguines had. Nowadays, it’s no longer a district for religious women, but here you’ll find the Catholic University of Leuven, a hospital, and a park. The old beguine houses are definitely worth visiting during your stay in this city.
