Munich the perfect city for cycling

Munich going by the motto “Munich may dich” as well as its mild climate makes it the perfect city to explore by bicycle.

In recent years, the German city has made huge investments in the city’s bicycle friendliness.

Don’t expect Dutch scenes yet, where the steel steed is almost worn on hands, but Munich is well on its way.

There are very many bicycle paths (constructed) crisscrossing the city. As a result, Munich residents are getting on their bikes more often towards work, school or on their way to visit friends. Meanwhile, the city has even earned the nickname “Radlhauptstadt,” or Capital of Bicycles.

Baja Bikes’ guides will tell you all about the city’s cultural and historical facts on this tour. Ask questions and take pictures? Of course you can!

Bicycle rules in Munich

Some rules in a row, for cycling in Munich:

  • Cyclists belong to the traffic in Germany, however, they have to share the road with motorized road users. When there is a bike lane they naturally cycle here.
  • Side-by-side cycling is permitted, provided it is possible.
  • The maximum speed for cyclists on Munich’s bike lanes is 20 mph.
  • Children under 8 years old are not allowed to use the bike lanes; they cycle on the sidewalk.
  • There are bike lanes without special traffic lights, in this case the traffic light applies to all road users.
  • A bicycle helmet is not mandatory in Germany, but is strongly recommended.
  • Using a phone on a bicycle is not allowed. It will also be fined.
  • Hands-free phone use is allowed, provided traffic can be heard clearly.
  • Cycling with alcohol is not a good plan. At 1.6 promile the driver’s license is taken away and from 0.3 promile it is fined.
  • Be careful when crossing the road, as in the Netherlands, a crosswalk is for pedestrians only. Cross with your bicycle in hand to gain the right of way.
  • Logical rules, but the bike must have proper lights and a bell.

The above rules for cycling in Munich differ little to nothing from the Dutch traffic rules. Cycling in Munich is nice, safe and a great way to get to know the city in a quick way. Enjoy the beautiful city and pedal away!
