What makes cycling in Seville so safe?

Got excited but wondering if it’s safe to bike in Seville? In terms of safety, this top city has been on the list of most bicycle-friendly cities for years. This is mainly due to the fact that the bike lanes have been greatly improved, creating more than 120 kilometers of bike paths. This gives you a choice of spacious, quiet bike lanes.

Cycling rules in Seville

Because of Seville’s (almost) flat infrastructure and warm climate, it is one of the Spanish cities where you can cycle well. More and more consideration is being given to cyclists and more and more bike lanes are being built. As in the Netherlands, there are some cycling rules you need to follow.

We’ve laid them out for you so you and those around you can enjoy them safely:

  • Like everywhere else, as a cyclist you should respect general traffic rules. Think about stopping at traffic lights, holding out your hand, cycling side by side in pairs at most, etc.
  • Adults are required to wear a bicycle helmet when riding on roads outside built-up areas. Minors under the age of 16 are always required to wear a bicycle helmet.
  • Bicycles can be parked anywhere, but for safety reasons we recommend using the bike racks. Furthermore, bicycles are often parked inside at night.
  • There are pedestrian sections in the city marked with accompanying international road signs. So do not cycle here.
  • In Seville there is a lot of one-way traffic and it is forbidden to cycle on the sidewalk. So pay attention here!
  • As in the rest of Spain, it is forbidden to cycle with headphones/earphones or with cell phone in hand. This actually reduces your attention to traffic.
  • Cycling on the highways is prohibited for minors under 14 years of age. Are you older than 14 and wearing a helmet? Then you are allowed to ride on the hard shoulder of freeways. You’ve probably seen this in Spain. Note that it is only allowed on freeways where there are no prohibition signs.

Bike route through the Vías Verdes cycling in Seville

Highly recommended are the vias verdes old train beds that have been converted into places where you can ride around leisurely. Also, motorists are now used to fellow road users on two-wheelers so you can cycle through the streets of Seville with peace of mind.
Not for nothing do some 70,000 people a day nowadays use bicycles in this sunny city.
